Just quick note to let you know that Taukay has added Sensational Revolution in Medicine to its current web radio rotation, to play every 30 hours for the next month. Their current playlist also features many of the other composers on the AMP roster.

Composer Richard Zarou recently did a podcast interview with me, for his blog, No Extra Notes. No Extra Notes is a weekly podcast about up-and-coming composers. The interview deals with why I write music, some of the inspirations behind my work, and a range of other topics. It also features two recent pieces of mine, Sensational Revolution in Medicine and Kiss Around the World.

Classical-music-themed social network Dilettante has selected me as one of three finalists for their inaugural Digital Composer-in-Residence competition (press release). This is a people’s choice award, so I would encourage you to vote for me! As part of the competition, the London Sinfonietta has recorded my submitted piece, Sensational Revolution in Medicine, which they will also perform live at a concert on 5 Nov at London’s Wilton’s Music Hall. Programme Note

The texts for the five pieces in this set are taken from spam email messages that I collected in 2006. I am attracted to the idea of using spam email texts because of what they represent. Since the purpose of commercial spam is always to trick someone into spending money, these texts are always targeted at our most deep-seated fears and vulnerabilities. This makes them a powerful source of subject matter.

Each of the five texts tries to exploit specific vulnerabilities, described below:

  1. Sensational Revolution in Medicine — Physical infirmity, failure of conventional treatments, lack of hope.
  2. The Most Important Work of Your Career — Job dissatisfaction, appeals to authority.
  3. One Hundred Seventy-Three Centimetres, Fifty-Three Kilograms — Loneliness, lack of social interaction, lack of romantic opportunity.
  4. Dear User. Why Don’t You… — Lack of self-confidence, problems with body image, lust.
  5. A Time of Resource — Greed, feelings of missing out, peer pressure.
